Shadows on the Grass

A companion piece to "Out of Africa," written years later. It's fine, and short, and the writing (as in Blixen's other work) is pretty, with nice images and inner-monologue sidebars throughout.

A look back to colonial Africa from a European who truly loves the land and has a somewhat sympathetic understanding of the indigenes but whose views nevertheless retain tinges of Western-colonial superiority. Still, the description of the landscape she loves, and the ways that have passed, is stunning.

Oh, aldrig har progressiv tankegang og racisme vaeret sa staerke sammen, Karen.
